If you haven’t already accepted that crypto is the future of currency, then you’re really behind the times now. In fact, UMD has recently decided to venture into the crypto community, announcing their very own “TerpCoin.”
UMD previously had their own minor currencies, such as dining dollars and Terrapin Express, which had simple 1-to-1 exchange rates with the US dollar at some restaurants and convenience stores on campus. However, TerpCoin will be a completely fresh concept, with its own blockchain-style economy in which its valuation is based on you, the Terps. This could lead to wild fluctuations in the value of each TerpCoin, with potential to moon, creating new money millionaires like Bitcoin and Dogecoin have in the past few years.
TerpCoin also will be considered legal tender for any UMD related payments. That means, with the appropriate TerpCoin equivalent, you could even cover tuition fees and on-campus housing costs! The University even plans to add a TerpCoin mining computer lab in AV Williams, which will be home to the new I-Series course, COIN100: Introduction to Crypto.
One proponent of the new TerpCoin system, Richard Kwik, stated: “Look, the future is on the blockchain, and a university is the perfect place to introduce a new Altcoin. These bright minds won’t be overwhelmed by the complexities of a decentralized market, and I know they will use their new investment portfolios wisely. I think that TerpCoin will go down in history with the greats of cryptocurrency, not just another memecoin.”
Kwik went on to talk about “mooning,” “dumping,” and “inflation,” but I wasn’t totally sure if he was still talking about crypto at that point so I chose to omit that from his quote. I personally did not understand a word of what Mr. Kwik was talking about, but he used a lot of big words so he probably knows what he’s talking about.
This is just the beginning of UMD’s exploration of the blockchain, with President Daryll Pines already announcing his own personal “Burnt-Out Turtle” line of NFTs. President Pines also stated that he plans to upload all of College Park onto the blockchain to become the world’s largest Metaverse University.
